urbanvessel is an interdisciplinary collective creating performance works rooted in the sounds and spaces of the urban environment. Urbanvessel was founded by architect/artist Christie Pearson and composer Juliet Palmer. Works to date include the city-wide improvisational FOUR LINES (soundaXis Festival, Toronto 2006), SLIP for the Harrison Baths (X Avant Festival, Toronto 2006), THE PROVINCE OF IMPOSSIBLE (Voice++ Festival, Open Space Arts, Victoria 2007) and STITCH (Freefall Festival 2008).
What’s up with the name? As a collective in search of a handle, we were inspired by Alvin Lucier’s series of compositions using gourds, boxes, bowls and other “sonorous vessels”. We like to think of the city as a particularly enormous sonorous vessel with our work arising from that resonance - creating metaphorical buzzing, distortion and moments of reverberation.
